Ankita Tiwari overcoming low attendance

Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

A major struggle for any teacher teaching in a government school is the paucity of students. Low attendance remains one of the biggest hurdles for teachers, even in primary grades, but a few decide to take this challenge in their stride. Ankita Tiwari from Raipur is one such teacher. Having taught for the last 14 years, she continuously works towards ensuring that maximum students benefit from the education that is available in her school.

“There are nearly 60 students in each class but at any given time not more than 55 are present in class.” The reasons for low attendance is tied to parents’ apathy towards the issue and lack of motivation in students themselves. In addition to this, families migrate frequently due to the nature of work they are engage in. To address these factors, Ankita has initiated increased number of Parent-Teacher Meetings and regularly encourages parents to send their children to school. She keeps a record of the contact number of all parents and when a student fails to turn up for class she contacts the concerned person directly or personally visits their house to check on the student.

To increase students’ motivation she takes extra efforts to make her classrooms well decorated and colourful, in order to create an exciting environment for her students. Additionally she organises activities and interesting announcements during school assemblies. Lack of student engagement with academics is another concern that Ankita is addressing. “Children sometimes don’t even know what subject is being taught in the classroom” To counter this, she wants to keep a cupboard in her classroom to store all of students’ notebooks and distribute them as per the class being conducted. Through this, she’s hoping students will start to identify and build better engagement with their learning materials.
