Haseeba Khatun and the journey from Hindi to English

“You have to speak their language to make them comfortable. Once they become comfortable, introduce a new step, a new word, a new world, slowly but consistently.” These are the wise words of Haseeba Khatun, a primary school teacher from Delhi. She was the first person to receive formal education in her family.

Haseeba has uncovered the biggest fortune in a technique which she uses to teach students English in class. And that is: begin with Hindi, their comfort zone. Then introduce a few English words, and finally transition to English. “They speak Hindi at home. Television programmes, movies and radio often expose them to some English words even before school. They usually try speaking in a language we colloquially call Hinglish, which is a mix of Hindi and English words.”

Haseeba says that the gradual progression from Hindi to English is smooth and often easier to grasp for students.
In her opinion, storytelling is the best tool teachers can rely on. Theatre is also a form of storytelling. Haseeba’s students performed a नुक्कड़ नाटक or street play on the theme of road safety at Jantar Mantar, that won many rewards. Her success at taking her students gradually from Hindi to English and using stories to empower them has won many hearts.
