Shrawan Kumar and The Heroes of Kosa

Till four years back, the women of Kosa Village spent their time either at home or on the farm. Since the farming season lasted for only four to six months in a year, most of their time was spent at home. Shrawan Kumar Yadav, a primary school teacher, changed that when he added another place to their list: the school.

In 2013, Shrawan invited every parent to come and experience school along with their children. His reason: “Children spend only 1/4th of their day in school. The rest of the time is spent at home, with the parents. Parents can have a great influence how well a child learns. Coming to school will help them understand how to play an active role in their child’s education.”

His initiative failed with the fathers. Most of them worked hard as labourers in places far from home. They did not have time for school. With the mothers, the challenges were very different. The women were used to running their households. They were not comfortable stepping out of their homes for school. Confidence was another issue. “We don’t know anything about studying,” they would say. “How can we even help?”

Shrawan patiently conveyed the importance of an involved parent to every mother. He knew that once a mother understands the benefit to her child, she will participate willingly. He was right. Soon, the mothers of Kosa started coming to school. They were attending classes, learning the subjects, checking on homework, and even packing the school bag together with their child. But this was only the beginning.

Within a few months, the mothers were doing a lot for the school. They conducted yoga sessions in the morning. They collectively prepared nutritious midday meals. They played games and decorated the classrooms along with the children. Wherever something could be done, a team of mothers came forward and did it. Shrawan’s initiative had turned out to be a great blessing for the school.

The women of Kosa have always had an enormous amount of energy. Now that energy was backed with the confidence and determination to take on any problem. The school had made them aware of their potential. They had proven themselves to be great mothers and knew they could do more. They decided that ridding Kosa of its social problems was their next mission. To reduce financial difficulties, they formed self-help groups and issued microloans. For a healthier village, they cleaned up the drains and garbage. This year, they even formed a group called “Mahila Commandos” to patrol the streets at night with sticks and put an end to alcoholism and gambling!

Shrawan is really proud of how the mothers have emerged as local leaders. But sometimes he still wonders if these are the same woman he had to convince so much to come to school four years ago.
